Getting found: how to make your Zapi listing work for you

A great listing gets clicks. Here is what to fill in and why it matters.

What makes a complete profile

A Zapi profile that gets results is not just a name and a phone number. It is a complete picture of what you do, where you do it, and why someone should choose you over the next result in the directory. The businesses that get the most clicks share a few things in common: they have filled in every field, their information is current, and they have written something that speaks directly to the person searching.

Start with the basics: your business name exactly as people know it, your category, your suburb and city, and your contact details. Then go further. Add your operating hours so customers know when to call. List every service you offer, not just the main one, because searches often start with a specific job rather than a business type. Add your website and social links so people who want to do more research have a path to follow. Each piece of information you add is another reason for a potential customer to stay on your page rather than tap the back button.

Why the photo matters

The profile photo is the first thing a person sees when they find your listing in the directory. A blurry selfie or a logo on a white background tells a visitor nothing about the person they are about to call. A clear, well-lit photo of you at work — or at minimum a professional headshot — tells them you take your business seriously. It also builds the kind of trust that converts a browse into a phone call.

You do not need a professional photographer. A well-lit photo taken with a modern smartphone in natural light is good enough. Stand outside on an overcast day, have someone take the photo at eye level, and make sure the background is tidy. That alone puts your profile ahead of the majority of listings in any category. If you have a physical space — a salon, a workshop, a shopfront — a photo of the space adds another layer of credibility that a portrait alone cannot provide.

How directory search works

When someone opens the Zapi directory and types "electrician Randburg" or "seamstress Cape Town", the search looks at business names, categories, service descriptions, and locations to find the closest matches. The more accurately and completely you have described your business, the more likely you are to appear in those results.

Category selection matters. Choose the category that most precisely describes what you do. If you are a graphic designer who also does web development, list both. If you are a plumber who also does geyser installations, your service description should say so explicitly. Think about the words your customers use when they search, not the words you use internally. A customer looking for someone to "fix a burst pipe" is not searching for "pressure systems maintenance" — write for the customer.

Tips for writing a bio that converts

Your bio is the paragraph a potential customer reads when they are deciding whether to call you or move on. It should answer three questions in three sentences: What do you do? Where do you work? Why should someone choose you? Keep it plain and specific. "I am a certified electrician based in Soweto with 12 years of experience in residential and commercial wiring, fault finding, and DB board upgrades. I serve clients across Johannesburg South and respond to most call-outs within 24 hours. Fully licensed with ECSA and available for emergency work on weekends." That bio tells someone everything they need to decide to call.

Avoid vague language like "passionate about quality" or "committed to excellence" — every business says that and it adds no information. Instead, mention your qualifications, your service area, your turnaround time, and any specialisation that sets you apart. Update your bio when your circumstances change. A profile that is clearly maintained signals to a visitor that the business is active and responsive.
